How to talk about handling stress and pressure in an interview
Everyone tells interviewers they work well under pressure; almost nobody can say how. - A pile of assertions with no mechanism anywhere — nothing here describes what the candidate actually does when overloaded.
- “Needs a deadline to get going” accidentally confesses procrastination and self-inflicted crunch.

Claiming immunity to stress reads as either low self-awareness or a lie; managed humanity reads as experience.
Should I say I thrive under pressure?
Not as a standalone claim — it is the single most common sentence this question produces, and unaccompanied it carries no information. If pressure genuinely sharpens you, demonstrate it: tell the story where you were at your best in the worst hour, and let the interviewer draw the conclusion. The evidence earns what the assertion cannot.
What if my best pressure example seems small?
Scale matters less than visibility of method. A double-booked Saturday where you calmly re-sequenced the day beats a vague reference to a huge crisis you cannot describe concretely. Interviewers extrapolate from how you operated — did you sort by consequence, did you communicate early, did you stay decision-capable — not from the headline size of the emergency.
What if the job itself is high-stress and I'm not sure I want that?
Use the question in both directions. Answer well, then ask what pressure actually looks like in the role — frequency, cause, whether spikes are seasonal or structural. Interviewers respect the question, and the answer tells you whether this is pressure you handle well or the grinding kind that erodes anyone. A job you would resent by spring is not a job the interview should win.
